The Anthony Family
Joseph Anthony went to sea and rose to the rank of Captain. He later moved to Philadelphia where he became a wealthy merchant with a fleet of ships trading with the West Indies, New York and Boston. He was also a director of the Bank of the United States. He fled Philadelphia to live less conspicuously on a farm in Pennsylvania at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He married Elizabeth Sheffield on March 11th, 1761, in Newport, Rhode Island. They were married by Rev. Gov. Gardner Thurston. Elizabeth's 3rd great grandfather was Francis Cooke that had sailed to America on the Mayflower. Gilbert Stuart, the great portraitist who painted the now famous portrait of George Washington that we see every day on the $1 bill was a nephew to Joseph Anthony, being the son of Joseph's sister, Elizabeth. Captain Anthony was among those who financed Gilbert Stuart's passage to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow. Joseph and Elizabeth had 4 children.
