The Anthony Family
Gilbert Stuart
(1755-1825)
Throughout the world today, people envision George Washington the way he was painted by Gilbert Stuart, nephew of Joseph Anthony. Mr. Stuart was one of the 18th century master portrait artists. Presidents Adams, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe, as well as many socially prominent men and woman sat for Gilbert Stuart. He set a standard for portraiture that would continue long after his death. Boston poet Sarah Wentworth Morton wrote about Stuart's portraits in 1803, "Tis character that breathes, 'tis soul that twines, Round the rich canvas, trac'd in living lines". His portraits are displayed in museums across the globe.
