William Cash, who died in 1708, Westmoreland Co, Va is the progenitor of the Cash line here in America. He was born in 1653 in Strathmiglo, Fife, Scotland. It's a mystery as to when he came to America, but he married Elizabeth Skinner in 1677, in Tidewater, Virginia. A British tax record in 1677 lists William Cash as 'seated' in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co, Va. He left a will, written 16 February, 1708/7, and recorded in Westmoreland Co, August 25th, 1708, naming his children: William, Thomas, John, James, Howard, Joseph, Peter, and a daughter, Anise Cash. His wife was named as executrix and guardian of his children, William, Thomas, Anise, until they became of age. Therefore it is believed all the other children were older than these three whose ages were given in the will. He died in 1708 and is buried in St. Pauls, Parish Cemetery, now King George County, Virginia.
Sarah Francis Cash was born May 7th, 1853. She was born in Telfair Co., GA. After her marriage, she moved with her husband, Moses Ayers, to Habersham Co., where they raised their family. Their life together was short. Sarah died in 1886, leaving Moses to raise their 6 children, the youngest only 16 months old.
William Hailey Cash, father of Sarah, was born in Habersham Co., in 1828. He married Hester Echols, the grand- daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Darius Echols. Hester was the mother to William's 15 children. He served with the Confederate States of America in the Georgia Infantry, 4th Battalion, Company G.
Between the Revolutionary War and Civil War, Jesse Cash, the father to William, lived and died. He was born in Virginia, but his father, Howard, took advantage of the Land Grant provided for his military service and moved the family to Georgia. Jesse was one of 7 children born to Howard and Lucy (Tyler) Cash. He married Mary Patricia Hailey. They had at least 5 children.
Howard Cash served in the Revolutionary War. He was born in Albermarle Co., Virginia to Stephen and Jemima Cash. He and his wife, Lucy (Tyler) had 7 children. In 1805, he was awarded a Georgia Land Lottery. Howard died on July 16th, 1843 in Cornelia, Elbert County, GA. He is buried on the Cash Plantation in a very peaceful place on a hillside under trees. The grave is marked by a Revolutionary veteran's headstone.
Westmoreland Co., Virginia, was the birthplace of Stephen Cash. Born there in 1726 to Robert Howard Cash and Ruth (Ephingstone/Walker). Stephen was apparently quite well off accordindg to his will which was probated in December of 1798. He married Jemima Grining and together they raised 7 children. It is possible that Stephen married a second time and had subsequent children, but I have no documentation.
There is quite a bit of controvery surrounding the name of Robert Howard Cash's wife, Ruth. There are several reasons for this...it appears she may have been a widow when they married. Her maiden name was either Elphingstone or Walker. Robert and Ruth raised 9 children in Amherst, Virginia.
